Do We Secretly Like Women Beaters?

The subject of women have recently been all the buzz in the sports world lately (and no, not exactly for athleticism….but by the way: Go Team USA)

anigif_enhanced-buzz-20272-1344548047-11

Women have been popping up all over ESPN because men have been popping them in the face!  And frankly, the overexposure has become a bit overwhelmingly nauseating.

RAYRICE-HOLZER-6401

High-powered athletes are getting caught taking a few swings at the females.  So what else is new? The media has been covering domestic violence issues amongst athletes for as long as I can remember.  So what makes is worse now?

Well for one, social media.  No matter how much we can love social media for how it instantly connects us to the entire world, it would be naive to ignore the bad that comes with it. We want to know everything that is out there and we want to know it NOW!  We are all like children eating up any news that we find entertaining and dramatic, and notable athletes beating up women on camera is something we can’t get enough of.  The same goes for those who do the actual reporting of the news as well.

Thanks to social media, we will always be in the”know” because we now can freely join in on the conversation without even being invited. #Rude

Dare I say that our actions have led me to believe that we unconsciously reward these miscreants? Yes, I do.   Take for instance, De’andre Johnson, former quarterback of the Florida State Seminoles. Right after he clocked a female college student in the face at a bar and was promptly dismissed from the football team by Coach Jimbo, ABC’s Good Morning America Sports scooped him up for a sit down interview within 1 week of the released footage.  Forgive me if I’m wrong, but don’t sit down interviews require some sort of compensation? Compensation for Mr. Johnson, and granted, his Mother!

la-sp-sn-deandre-johnson-apology-20150714

Something isn’t right there….

tumblr_m91fn7r6at1r15tyq

Same goes for Ranay Rice, Ray Rice’s personal punching bag for one fleeting moment in an Atlantic City hotel elevator.  That domestic dispute alone got more media coverage than the Super Bowl.  I’m sure Ranay Rice was compensated for her in-person interview(s) as well.  Believe me, there were multiple interviews.

images

I know, I know, these in-person interviews aren’t all that bad.  For one, they shed light on an important issue that needs to be discussed and dissected in order to mitigate any similar future misfortunes. And two, it gives women who may have been victims of domestic abuse a voice, a once ignored voice that many can and need to relate to.

But do we really need to give all of these convicted male athletes another platform to plead their case? Do we need to hear more of their excuses for hitting a woman? Don’t get me wrong, female athletes can be guilty for the same actions.  Just look at Hope Solo parading around the Women’s World Cup like she is has never even touched a fly.  Homegirl has three domestic violence incidents under her belt, with her being the Fight Club culprit!  One of the very few situations where the double standard works to the advantage of women.  Sigh.

tumblr_mk4trgXCQK1rdkqxgo1_r1_1280

I think we heard enough from males discussing the domestic mistakes they’ve made in the past.  Good for them….but do we really need to see it, hear it?  Can we, as viewers, even tell if these guys are telling the truth? By us merely watching their ESPN/Good Morning America TV spots on the domestic issues at hand inadvertently rewards these guys, listening to their forced apologies and considering absolution. We aren’t directly rewarding them for their actions but we are subconsciously thanking them for entertaining us, and of course, giving television channels their precious ratings.

anderson-cooper-surprised-shake-head

If compensation is actually accepted, then we clearly have our cultural priorities fucked up.  If we wanted to preserve any dignity that is left in these assailants’ souls, even their families, we as a society would let the armed forces deal with the legality of the situation (DUH!), but more importantly, we would merely walk away.  Why pay attention to someone who doesn’t deserve your attention, doesn’t deserve your beloved ESPN watching? The only reason we are paying attention to these stories is because violence is so engrained in our American culture. What can I say, America don’t take shit from no one.

tumblr_m6lwu9tkd61qbepy1o1_r4_250

We need to make a conscious effort to stop rewarding these guys.  Paying more and more attention to these men is cowardice and shameful.  We are cowardice ourselves if we give these guys the time of day. Go watch something more positive and constructive, like Animaniacs.

giphy

Let’s stop rewarding these guys by giving them the pleasure of sitting down and explaining themselves. Who cares? You hit a woman. You are scum.  Go away……

Rousey Rages On

So last night was fun. The heavily favored Ronda Rousey defeated Cat Zingano in a record 14-second submission in the bantamweight title fight.

c43fcbc0a9167d096f0f6a706700e8b5Kudos for Rousey.  She remains the undefeated champion of Women’s UFC. I think most of our reactions were along the lines of….. WTF OMG?!?!?!!?!

But Rousey’s victory isn’t what upsets me. What upsets me is that my friends and I decided to purchase a $60 Pay Per View Package that aired only 4 fights which resulted in 3 first found knock-outs.  I know you can’t anticipate the length of a fight, but jesus, you want to see some action, action you can at least recall fondly about.

ronda

This either means that fighters are getting much better at their craft or fighters are getting stupider by the second. There is a strong possibility that Cat Zingano is the latter.

The Grinches of 2014

When Christmas time rolls around, you can’t help but think of your life and the people around you.  These swimming holiday thoughts are supposed to deliberately make you feel grateful and joyous that you don’t live in a third world country, can freely express yourself on a whim and have some form of sustenance to get you through your day, whether it be food or ESPN, you got it.  Life is good people!

grinch-smile-o

But you can’t help but wonder why so many people out there have it so good yet are complete jerk faces. Especially athletes.  So let us toast to this year’s Sports Grinches to more or less make us feel better about ourselves….when in actuality we still wish we were a rich Grinch.

1.  Floyd Mayweather Jr.

floyd-mayweather-surprised

How can I not pick this buttface.  You can always count on Mayweather to make the cut for the rest of his life.  But a little incident involving a friend’s suicide definitely put him over the edge this year.  Mayweather apparently witnessed his friend’s suicide over a face to face chat on his laptop.  He obviously failed at saving a life, so he decided to take his unapologetic ass to a Clipper game later that night.

Plus, is he really going to fight Pacquiao in May?  The fight will OF COURSE fall under the exact same day as the Cotto vs Canelo show down.  Sigh…….

Floyd mayweather

2. A-rod

806438685

This jerk just doesn’t want to go away.  In the beginning of the year, A-rod  was expected to make his big comeback from his PED suspension.  That turned out to be a big fat NO.  It was then later revealed that he paid off a family member , his cousin, to keep his mouth shut about A-rod’s shenanigans.  Would it be terrible to just come clean A-rod??   One of the major reasons he is such a class-A Grinch is that jerk face smile he is always dawning.  Then again, the Yankees do owe him about $60 million……

3.  Roger Goodell

GoodellMoneyDive

There is just not enough time in the day to begin discussing the gravity of Roger Goodell’s “Grinch” behavior he so unabashedly displayed this past year.  We shall see how 2015 will unfold for Mr. Goodell….wait, I mean the NFL.

4.  Donald Sterling

donald-sterling-351

Well this guy should be at the top of everyone’s list for 2014.  Donald Sterling proceeded to become the most hated man in the NBA overnight due to his Uncle Ben behavior.  Well, good thing he is banned from the sport entirely.

5. Lebron James

10432555_10152853480086100_6594317671242409273_n

He went back to Cleveland.  Enough said.

America the Beautiful

This World Cup has already proven a lot to the United States.  For one, it proved that we as a country might actually like the sport.

2014-world-cup-logo

It’s not that we don’t like soccer, we just haven’t embraced it.  If we fully embraced it, we would call it by its original name: FUTBOL.

Sadly, we already have FOOTBALL in this country.  The two just sound too similar, so I don’t think that will change.  We just love FOOTBALL too damn much.  Hell, I don’t even have a category for soccer on this blog.  I really should get on that…..

tumblr_n6y4myJiQB1ro7kx2o1_400 But this is the first World Cup that America actually cared because it may have been the best for our country.  Without question, we witnessed some historic moments, we made it out of the “Group of Death” alive (and kicking, haha!) topped by some amazing late game dramatics in each of the knock-out rounds.

tumblr_n815z470KH1sfhsbwo1_500

If we want to break it down, this World Cup had ESPN and Univision breaking U.S. ratings for matches played not only by the U.S. but also other countries.  Twitter had a good time too.  Here is a heat map courtesy of Bleacher Report, illustrating the Twitter activity taking place during the final game, Germany vs. Argentina.

BsdxGDXCMAEulzK copy

(On a side note: I think one of the reasons why this World Cup was the most watched in the U.S. is because of its location: Brazil.  Brazil as known as a diverse country filled with rich culture, food, music, ultimately exuding a passionate fan base.  One of the greatest soccer players to ever play the game, Pele, is Brazilian.  You think politically heated Russia and a controversial Middle Eastern country, Qatar, will get similar ratings?  I can’t predict the future, but I can see the ratings take a little dive in these upcoming World Cups.)

100313-Qatar-World-Cup-PI_20131003104733247_660_320

So where does this leave American soccer?

I think America is on a healthy track towards embracing soccer.  It will just take time.  Maybe a little longer than American soccer fans would like, but this isn’t something that needs to be rushed.  Like anyone showing up late to the party, you’re not going to take 5 tequila shots to make up for lost time.  Well, maybe….but that’s just asking for trouble…..and is completely dumb.

drunkenKenyan

Just like any sport we love in this country, we want it to be able represent a unique personal trait that we can be proud of, something that will ultimately define our character.  Usually those terms include strength, perseverance, bold, determination and just straight up awesomeness.  Our goalie, Timmy Howard, definitely proved to be worthy of that category, setting a World Cup record with 16 saves in a single game. Despite the loss, he persevered through the rest of the world’s disbelief in team U.S.A.  Take that other countries who always do better than us in the World Cup!

tumblr_n83vidaDxc1tq9q5vo1_500

America prides itself on heroes, especially when it comes to world events.  Why do you think we have a daily medal count during the Olympics?  We have to feel like we are the best.  And when it comes to soccer, we aren’t the best.  It’s that simple.

If American history has taught us anything, we know we don’t like to lose. And when we do lose, we seem to overlook EVERYTHING that made us losers.  Probably because we were drunk……

tumblr_n6yq0k06Et1txj0v9o1_1280

Maybe we will be the best someday but for now soccer is merely just a sport we are OK at, something we don’t want to fully embrace in our culture until we know we can unequivocally WIN.  I KNOW WE WILL WIN.  The chant isn’t as catchy but at least exudes some type of American confidence.  Besides, we started off as the underdogs and haven’t done so bad for ourselves thus far.  Soccer could merely be just another stepping stone for our nation to prove to everybody else that we are the best.

Besides….we can’t always let the Germans win.

A Must Read!

Happy Tuesday to all!

I just received a lovely email from good ol’ Dad, sharing with me a fun-filled email that was sent to the Chicago Tribune Newspaper after an article, written by Clarence Page, was published, an article  about changing the name of the Washington Redskins.

surprised-man-reading-letter

All I can say is YES, YES , YES.  Please read and tell me if you agree that we should send this guy a honey-baked ham.

tumblr_mfhuzsrn2a1rrbedbo1_500

Dear Mr. Page…

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the “Foreskins” to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.

I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.

Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60’s alive. Gone! It’s offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men’s lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the

Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than “the Beavers.”

Hispanics go BOOM.

OMG, Mexico did the unthinkable. They tied with Brasil….in a futbol game…..at the World Cup.  Damn, and the hits just keep on coming.

tumblr_n5bm0k4X8R1rge74zo1_500

And Chile just defeated Espana today.

Group B - Spain vs Chile

The World Cup can be one crazy place where dreams come true.  The top two teams have been knocked down to the minors, leaving the underrated and overlooked teams a chance to shine on the ultimate world stage.   Although Brasil has yet to be eliminated (adios Espana), it is still a pretty awesome sight to see these dominant teams be defeated by smaller countries (who also speak Spanish, bah! Granted I know Brasil doesn’t speak Spanish….but Portuguese is Spanish+French…..close enough).

tumblr_n46s5pkSTj1tpnm6mo1_400

Who knows who will win.  My money is on Germany.  Because who wants to piss off the Germans?

tumblr_ml61uy0TpJ1s9b7q5o1_500

Does the U.S. have a chance?  Who the hell knows.  If Chile and Mexico can do it, why can’t the U.S.?

The U.S. have defeated Ghana and will be taking on the illusive Portugal Sunday.  They might not have anything to worry about if Cristiano Rinaldo decides not the play.  Not sure if the best player in the game right now will want to opt out and sit on the bench nursing his wounds.  Just look at those abs……

tumblr_ltk301NAVJ1qgq0eqo1_500

We shall see if another smaller hispanic country will flourish this weekend, because if they do…..a little more respect should be given to the lil guys.  The World Cup is all about respect.  Come on, just look at how all the futbol players respect each other on the field.  Never lying, never acting out, never harming one another.  I think you can always count on a futbol player for being the most honest athlete out there.
